WASHINGTON PARK — U. of C. will build a new art center across the street from the potential site for Barack Obama's presidential library in Washington Park. The Green Line Arts Center will expand arts programming in the neighborhood with additional space for music, theater, film and dance. Located at 317 E. U. of C. Trauma Center to Bring Greater Healthcare Access

HYDE PARK — In a vital boost to healthcare access for South Side residents, U. of C. announced in April its proposed trauma center will serve more than 2,700 patients. The $269 million revitalization of Mitchell Hospital will be spent on an adult trauma center, cancer and specialty care hospital and additional medical-surgical beds. U. of C. originally planned to open a center at Holy Cross Hospital with Mount Sinai, but agreed to resident’s demands for greater health care access when it announced in December the trauma center would be built on the Hyde Park campus. Restoration Update for Fire-Gutted Shrine of Christ the King

WOODLAWN- Crews are racing to restore Shrine of Christ the King before winter after a fire gutted the church last October according to Curbed Chicago. The Archdiocese of Chicago announced the church, 6401 South Woodlawn, would be restored after Woodlawn residents rallied behind the historic building. The neighborhood group Coalition to Save the Shrine has raised $1 million for the first part of the restoration, and hopes to have a new roof and windows up before the winter. Bronzeville’s Historic Rosenwald Courts Renovations

BRONZEVILLE- Rosenwald Courts, once home to Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and Jesse Owens, will reopen as affordable and senior housing later this year. Originally known as the Michigan Boulevard Garden Apartments, the apartment complex at 47th Street and Michigan Avenue was built in 1929 as a gift from Sears Roebuck magnate Julius Rosenwald to address overcrowding, according to Curbed Chicago. Rosenwald Courts was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, but saw its last occupant leave in 2000. Despite the severe deterioration since then, developers are restoring the property’s eight buildings. Humboldt Park Beach to Reopen this Summer

HUMBOLDT PARK- Humboldt Park Beach will return in July after the community oasis vanished last year. When the Chicago Park District closed the beach in May of 2015 for the first time in 40 years due to financial reasons, residents protested through petitions and a sit-in. Now DNAinfo reports officials have revealed plans for a revamped lagoon restoring Humboldt Park Beach’s claim to, “everything Lake Michigan has – plus cleaner water.” The beach includes a 10 foot deep cold water hole to decrease water temperature and a bubbler to improve oxygen circulation. Target Bringing New Store to 53rd Street in Hyde Park

HYDE PARK — Target announced Tuesday it will open a new store in the Vue53 development in Hyde Park. The retailer will open in late fall 2016 or early spring of 2017 with a 21,000-square-foot store, nearly all of the retail space in the project currently under construction at 1330 E. 53rd St. The store wil be one of Target’s flexible-store designs, which are considerably smaller than the 170,000-square-foot stores Target has built in the past and will offer items tailored to the community.
