$100 Million Proposal Would Transform South Side

"Chicago Today is Two Cities" Lured by a $100 million carrot, a Chicago civic group is ramping up its effort to revive plans for expanded transit service in the bustling and increasingly congested Loop area with a new element: better transit to the Barack Obama library site, too, combined with new investment in housing and jobs on the South Side. The new proposal comes from the Chicago Central Area Committee, a 60-year-old organization focused on growing and making downtown work better. Chicago’s Landmarks Commission Honors SCG Graystone Mansions

The Commission on Chicago Landmarks honored 13 unique redevelopment projects, including Steele Consulting Group's Graystone Mansions at 928-30 E 42nd Place, with the 2016 Preservation Excellence Awards on October 13. "The awards reflect outstanding commitments by private property owners to preserve and promote the City's architectural heritage and its enduring impact on the character of our neighborhoods," said David L. Reifman, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Planning and Development, which provides staff services to the Landmarks Commission. The awards were presented to project representatives at the former Chicago Athletic Association building. Washington Park Tennis Village Starts Construction

The Washington Park Tennis Village is moving ahead with construction a year after crews uncovered unexpected costs from existing electrical and sewer lines. Preparing the foundation for the tennis building at 5400 S. State St. cost an extra $4 million, but the project manager anticipates a July 2017 grand opening. Founder of Kenwood-based XS Tennis Kamau Murray raised $16.9 million for the facility, which can serve 5,000 students. The building has room for 12 indoor tennis courts, a running track, classrooms and 15 outdoor courts. In addition to playing tennis, students in the program will receive tutoring from U of C, a partner of XS Tennis. Bronzeville Mariano’s Coming in October

The wait is nearly over for Bronzeville residents as a new Mariano’s approaches its October 11 opening date. According to DNAinfo, the upscale grocery store on Martin Luther King Drive and Pershing Road will hire 400 people.It will be located on the former Ida B Wells project site, named after the African American journalist who was an early leader in the Civil Rights Movement. When the development was announced two years ago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said it would help reduce “food deserts” and increase access to fresh food in the city. Steele Consulting has spearheaded dozens of developments in the area over the decades, which has helped prime the neighborhood for further commercial growth. How Walkable are Chicago’s New Developments?

Chicago ranked second in the nation for walkable new construction in a Redfin study that measures how pedestrian-friendly cities are. The report compares the ratings of new construction with the overall city walk score. "Walkability definitely boosts the value of real estate. Location is basically what that translates to," said Steele Consulting CEO Hasani Steele. Redfin found that 89 percent of Chicago's new construction exceeds the city walk score. The Windy City only trails Philadelphia in this measure.
